WHAT IS A CATARACT?

A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens inside the eye. It is very common with 60% of all 60 year olds having some signs of lens opacification. Developing a cataract is an inevitability of age and some lens changes are present in all people who are over 80 years of age. The symptoms of cataract include blurring of vision and glare in sunny conditions. Cataracts can also result in the prescription becoming increasingly more myopic (near-sighted). There are other causes of cataract except age and these include; diabetes (diabetic cataract), trauma (traumatic cataract), congenital cataract, inflammation (uveitis) and the use of steroids.

Cataracts normally occur with refractive error such as astigmatism and presbyopia for example a person may have a cataract, hypermetropic astigmatism and presbyopia all together and all of these problems can be corrected with one procedure with an appropriately skilled and trained surgeon carrying out the operation with a premium intraocular lens.

MORE INFORMATION

Allon Barsam uses premium lens implants which can correct astigmatism such as toric intraocular lenses or presbyopic lenses which can give a person both distance and reading vision simultaneously with the use of a multifocal intraocular lens. He also has considerable experience with combinations of these options such as with the use of the multi-focal toric lens. Mr Barsam can carry out his cataract surgery manually or with the use of a femtosecond laser, laser cataract surgery, and was the first British Ophthalmologist in the world to carry out this procedure in April 2011.

The procedure is normally carried out as a day-case procedure under local anaesthetic drops and is not painful. The lens is implanted through a keyhole microscopic sutureless corneal incision and typically takes 10-15 minutes to perform. Normally each eye is done on a separate occasion, usually 1-2 weeks apart.

Mark Smith - LASEK laser eye surgery

“I would like to express my most sincere gratitude for the work you do. The professionalism and care I received from the clinic staff and you was outstanding. I am still amazed at the efficiency of the procedure, and have no doubt that choosing to have this surgery with you, is one of the best decisions I have made. My vision has been restored to heights I never knew before and the healing period has been almost undetectable. Mr. Barsam, you are extremely knowledgeable in your field and are a true miracle-worker. I will be forever grateful, and would highly recommend to anyone who wishes to have the Lasik procedure done by you.”
